Whether you’re preparing your property for sale or you’re just trying to keep your home looking it’s best, it’s always important to make sure that your kitchen is clean and tidy.
The kitchen is often thought of as the heart of a home. It’s where you and your family will spend a great deal of time each day preparing and eating meals; it’s a place where people will often congregate when you have guests over; and it can often be a deal-breaker for some people when purchasing a home.
So no matter the reason, how can you make sure that your kitchen is always looking beautiful and organized? Declutter!
Often your kitchen isn’t actually “dirty” per se, it’s just messy with unnecessary clutter that can unfortunately give it the appearance of being unkempt and unappealing.
Here are five simple tips that you can follow to declutter your kitchen!
1.Don’t let the dishes pile up in the sink
A simple “clean as you go” method will do your kitchen wonders. Instead of leaving the dishes in the sink after you’ve finished cooking or eating, wash them up straight away or pack them into the dishwasher. Not only will it save you the headache of remembering to do it later (and after the food has had time to dry or harden on your dinnerware making things even more time-consuming to clean) but it will make your sink area always look its best.
2.Don’t use your fridge as a bulletin board
No doubt most of us are guilty of this – sticking the kids’ school permission slips, bills, mail, and whatever other documents we want to remind ourselves about on the fridge and just leaving them there. While it’s perfectly fine to keep the odd reminder, invitation, a shopping list and a few decorative magnets and photos on your fridge, you definitely shouldn’t let things pile up. Once you’ve finished with something, make sure you remove it and keep the items rotating regularly. A fridge full of unorganized papers can certainly make it look messy and no doubt it won’t actually help you stay organized either!
3.Make sure everything has its own place
Organise your kitchen so that every item and appliance has its own “home” so to speak and always put it back in that spot when you’re finished using it. If the item lives on display on your kitchen bench make sure it’s clean after use.
4.If you have any open shelving, keep these areas organized
Open shelving or see-through doors on cupboards can seem trendy at first, but unless you maintain the appearance they can make your kitchen seem messier than it really is. Make sure everything is always stacked neatly in these areas and that the items match i.e. don’t display mismatched mugs or plates in the one spot. You can also utilize these areas to display any special or pretty items like jugs, bowls or vases that you might own.
5.Designate specific areas for any other activities
As mentioned earlier, the kitchen can often be the central hub of a home and of course more than cooking and eating takes place here, whether it’s paying the bills, work or the kids’ homework. To keep things organized, make sure all items relating to these activities have their own space or spot to store items.
Good luck decluttering your own kitchen!
