GOLF. Or perhaps for the sake of this article G.O.L.F
Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews is the undisputed altar of golf. It’s generally accepted as the birthplace of one of the world’s most popular sports. But do you know where the word G.O.L.F came from? At the risk of attracting sexist comments…..I’ll share the story with you
The word G.O.L.F stands for Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden. The ladies only rule stood firmly in place until very recently. Can you imagine the furor if they tried to introduce that rule today?
Thankfully there’s never been a ban on women at the immaculately presented Pymble Golf Club.
When Pymble Golf Club opened in 1926, the golfing greens were fenced in. You see, golfers weren’t the only ones to frequent the sprawling green fairways back then.
Pymble Golf Club was formed on land known as ‘Brown’s Orchard’. Initially it was used for grazing dairy cattle. Many cows and one large bull continued to roam the fairways after the golf club opened.
Imagine setting up for tee off at hole number one. You place your tee in the green grass, balancing your ball on top. Grab your driver and prepare for the shot. You look up, then back at the ball.
Eyes on the prize as you remind yourself to keep your shoulders square. Your hands adjust and you’re just about to pull into your back swing when next thing you know you’re running for dear life towards the green that has been cleverly (and necessarily) fenced in to block yourself from the oncoming bull.
It seems like pure madness, right? Well, you can understand why when the first golf club committee was formed, their first act was to have the bull removed from the course. Like we said, progress is a good thing.
Now the only animals you’ll see at Pymble Golf Club are the ducks and geese in the dam near the signature 16th hole. There’s also a flock of beautiful native birds. No need to make a hurried retreat from these.
In the 95 years since the club’s bull-fighting origins, the club has transformed into something rather spectacular. Pymble Golf Club is now more of a destination in addition to boasting one of the area’s most beautifully maintained golfing greens. In fact Pymble Golf Club is regarded as one of Australia’s finest parklands and one of the most challenging courses around.
Membership is highly sought after. Its a great way for locals to socialise, while keeping fit and active in the beautiful outdoors. The club really offers something for everyone, with various groups catering for golfers of different playing levels, from beginner right through to advanced. There’s even a cadet program on offer to help young people foster their talent in the sport with weekly coaching sessions.
But Pymble golf course is much more than just a venue to play an enjoyable round of golf. They also host a monthly gardening group called the ‘Team of Red’. Volunteer club members get together once a month to work on various projects around the property, keeping the beautiful grounds in their immaculate condition.
Speaking of the picturesque grounds, Pymble Golf Club is also a highly popular wedding location! With ceremonies amongst the beautiful trees and gardens, and receptions in the stylish club house, a wedding at PGC is truly magical. They also host other functions regularly like birthdays, bar mitzvah’s and a McConnell Bourn team favourite – traditional afternoon high tea.
Of course you don’t have to be celebrating an event to enjoy the club house. Once you’ve finished a round of golf you can always enjoy a drink and a meal from the club house’s renowned catering facilities. Relaxing out on the large terrace overlooking the golfing green is truly the perfect place to mingle after a game.
If you’re thinking about moving closer to the golfing green at Pymble golf course, we’d love to welcome you to our nearby office in St Ives.
