Have you always been in real estate? If no, what’s your background?
No, although I have been working in real estate auctioneering for about 15 years now. I have also been working in media for the past 20 years. However, when I first left school, I wanted to be a professional tennis player and I was on-track to do that but it didn’t end up working out.

Why real estate?
I’ve always had a passion for real estate. I started off auctioning for big charity events that were associated with the media organisation that I worked for. It reached a point where I decided that I just wanted to explore that path. To do so I took three years off to learn the craft, the legislation and to get my license. I had always known that I was going to fall into the world of real estate, I just didn’t know when.

What made you want to become an auctioneer?
I think it was the whole charity factor. When working in media, there were a lot of sponsored charity events I attended and after hearing so many unfortunate stories I thought that maybe there was a way that I could help out. So when I got the opportunity, I decided to make a difference by donating my time and skill by auctioning at these events. That’s what really got me into auctioneering and I still do it to this day!

What qualities do you think you need to be a great auctioneer?
It’s really hard to define that sort of thing, the truth is that everybody has their own niche and their own set of skills that allow them to be great at what they do, and it’s not always the same. I personally just try to be transparent and honest with everybody on the day and throughout the process, giving people the support they need. It’s all about forming relationships and building trust between everybody.

What’s your favourite thing about your job?
My favourite thing about my job would have to be helping people, and the environment in which I work.I really love getting the opportunity to assist the vendors in achieving a truly amazing result whilst helping our purchasers feel that they have been given a fair opportunity to purchase! I love the excitement of it all and working in this amazing team environment that is McConnell Bourn. Through our auction process we really ensure that we utilise the best and fairest way to achieve spectacular prices for our vendors.

What's the funniest or most embarrassing moment you've ever had at work?
There is this one moment that pops straight to mind, it was a while ago when I was auctioning off a property on the Northern Beaches. It was a very successful auction and at the end of it I was approached by an underbidder, they came up to me and said “look, it was a great auction and I didn’t buy the place…” and I wasn’t sure where they were going with this statement but then they followed up by saying “but seeing as I didn’t buy the place can you take me on a date?” I wasn’t expecting that at all and I felt terrible saying no! I had to say “unfortunately I can’t take you on a date, but I can give you these!” and I handed her this bouquet of flowers that were used by the agent to present the property on the day.

What are three things you couldn’t live without?
Obviously my family, with four kids and a wife it’s the obvious answer! This might sound corny but I actually love my weekends, yes I work over them but I seriously look forward to waking up early on a Saturday morning and getting ready for work, and finally daily exercise, it’s what keeps me sane!

Where is your favourite place in the world?
Again this might sound corny but I’d most definitely have to say at home with the family. I love it when I have the opportunity to stay at home and spend time with my family.

Do you have a secret talent? If so, what is it??
Well it’s not so much a secret talent, per se, but it’s rugby league calling. I was grooming myself for quite a while to become a rugby league caller on the radio and on television. It’s a hidden ability of mine that not many people at all know about!

What do you love most about MB?
It’s the team, without a doubt. The machine that is the McConnell Bourn team. From Matt and Sam to the agents, it’s all of us combined! Our team is extraordinary, there aren’t many agencies at all that have teams like we do at MB.
