Sydney’s North Shore has long been a magnet for artists, from Tom Roberts and Arthur Streeton and others who set up artists’ camps in the 1880s and 1890s to Grace Cossington-Smith who gave us some of our iconic images of the Sydney Harbour Bridge arch.

Later luminaries like Roland Wakelin and Margaret Olley were attracted to the beauty of the North Shore (although Olley, as we know, settled eventually in Paddington). The Lavender Bay artists of the 1970s and 1980s included the most famous ‘bad boy’ of Australian art, Brett Whiteley.

The abundance of trees, the secluded coves and unspoilt nature of the North Shore have kept artists in residence right up to the present day. If you’re looking for outstanding art for your home, from local or international artists, we’re blessed with some fabulous art galleries on our doorstep.

Where to find art from North Sydney to Willoughby and beyond

The tradition of local artists continues, with many art galleries representing both established and emerging artists.

Artarmon Galleries
479 Pacific Hwy, Artarmon

Artarmon Galleries’ stable of artists includes Rod Spicer, a landscape artist whose works are reminiscent of Streeton, printmaker Ursula Laverty and Fabia Tory, whose distinctive colourful art is a perennial favourite.

The Ku-Ring-Gai Art Society (ourkas)

The Ku-Ring-Gai Art Society is a collective that holds exhibitions at the St Ives Shopping Village.

Baith Aynsley-Lewis, a New Zealand-born artist who exhibits with the Society, is well-recognised for his delicate landscape watercolours, including many that feature North Shore landmarks. Linda Joyce’s beautiful Australian bush and outback paintings include a nod to the style pioneered by Georgia O’Keeffe, exploring the sculptural qualities of skulls. New York-born Bruce Harkness, having honed his skills while working in advertising, paints in an almost surrealistic style that evokes realist painter Andrew Wyeth.

Rochfort Gallery
317 Pacific Highway, North Sydney

This local gallery with a wealth of talent represents a multitude of artists including Phil Stallard, an abstract artist whose recurring theme of water is expressed in vibrant colour.

Barbara Campbell-Allen creates ceramics with soul that express the Australian landscape in sculpture while artist Esther Bolz creates artworks using everyday household recipe ingredients as her focus. Melbourne-based Greg Mallyon explores the Australian outback from an aerial perspective with drama using light, shade and colour.
