Schools on Sydney’s North Shore: which is right for your child?

Written by Matthew Bourn
If your child is transitioning to primary or high school in 2021 or the following years, now is the time to decide which of the North Shore’s educational institutions to send them to.

It is difficult to go wrong when it comes to both public and private schools on Sydney’s North Shore. In fact, the hardest decision is which outstanding facility to choose.

Take a look at some of the most established and reputable schools on Sydney’s north shore.

Private Girls Schools

Sydney’s North Shore is home to some of the city’s leading girls schools.

In Wahroonga, privately run Abbotsleigh was placed in the top 12 Sydney schools when it came to HSC results in 2018. Operating since 1885, the school accepts students from preschool age and champions equality for women and girls.

Nearby, Pymble Ladies College fosters “a world-class educational environment with the importance of global citizenship and a worldwide perspective central to our strategic intent.”
Pymble accepts students from kindergarten and above, and allows borders to live on campus. Recent reviews describe the Principal as “fantastic” and the teachers as “caring and helpful”.

Loreto Normanhurst is another leading Sydney girls school with more than 120 years of history. Placing emphasis on relationships and learning, it educates students from years 5-12.

Private Boys Schools

Knox Grammar School is also known as a leading Sydney educational institution and was ranked 23rd out of Sydney’s 650 schools in 2018 for HSC results. This school welcomes students from kindergarten to year 12 and has a range of programs to encourage well-rounded students.

Private Co-educational Schools

Originally a boys’ school Barker College, located in Hornsby, is now a co-educational Anglican facility which, according to its website “instils in our students the capacity, insight and knowledge they need to inspire real change.”

Positive reviews from parents and students highlight the friendly staff as well as the music, robotics and swimming programs.

Public schools

Hornsby Girls has operated since 1930 and was placed in the top ten schools for HSC results in 2018. This academically selective institution focuses on holistic learning and student leadership. It accepts students starting from Year 7.

St Ives High offers strong support for learning, with multicultural programs as well as programs for gifted and talented students.

Killara High School offers leadership opportunities in the arts, sport, social justice and student council. According to their website Statement of Purpose, “School programs focus on learning for life through the development of students’ capacities to reflect on experience, make wise decisions and continue learning.”

Primary schools

In the heart of Wahroonga, Wahroonga Public School is known as ‘The Bush School’. It is listed on the Good Schools Guide as having above-average NAPLAN results.

Corpus Christi in St Ives is a Catholic school that educates young children, providing an “inclusive family-oriented community which promotes respect for the individual and service to others”.

Turramurra North Public School is another option for Upper North Shore students. Located in Turramurra, it has a history of above-average NAPLAN scores.

Prouille Catholic School in Wahroonga has an excellent reputation within the community. The school has a number of recent achievements including Joint Highest Scoring School in Maths Olympiad 2018.

To decide on a school, the best people to talk to are the parents of students who attend. Find out what their experience has been like and if they would recommend the institution. You may also wish to reach out to the school to discuss whether or not they think your child will thrive in the environment the school has cultivated.
